On 17 April 1909, Giusto Gervasutti, one of the greatest mountaineers of the first half of the 20th century, was born in Cervignano del Friuli. Having moved to Turin to study at university, he began a systematic pursuit of high-level climbs, utilising the techniques he had developed whilst climbing in the Dolomites. He was dubbed “il fortissimo” after winning the first edition of the Mezzalama Trophy (1933).
